Midlands Grand National Preview..

Hi Reader

The Midlands Grand National is a Premier Handicap National Hunt race in Great Britain. It is a handicap chase and is run at Uttoxeter Racecourse in March, over a distance of about 4 miles and 2 furlongs. During the race there are 25 fences to be jumped. The race held Listed status until 2022 and was re-classified as a Premier Handicap from the 2023 running when Listed status was removed from handicap races.

The first race was run on 3 May 1969. The race was initially run over 4m2f and was increased to 4m4f in 1977. During this period it would have been, assuming accurate measurements, by 24 yards or approximately the length of a cricket pitch, the longest race in the NH calendar. In 1991 the distance was dropped to 4m, before being upped to 4m2f in 1993. The distance of the race was then reduced to 4m1½f in 2004 before being returned to 4m2f in 2018. It is now the second-longest race in the British calendar, after the Grand National at Aintree.

Midlands National on Snowden Radar

The Midlands National arrives the day following the four day Cheltenham Festival. The timing is a double edged sword for punters. Those that enjoyed a wining week at Cheltenham want more while those punters that suffered losses need a break.

Thankfully, we turned a small profit at Cheltenham. Gaelic Warrior was imperious in the Gold Cup while Johnnywho helped our bank balance no end!. Let's try and boost the bank again with a winner in the Midlands National.

Git Maker caught my eye staying on dourly for fifth place in the grand national trial race at Haydock. He stays all day and will love the soft ground and extra half mile in the Midlands National. The handicapper has given him a chance as he runs off a nine-pound lower mark than a year ago. Git Maker finished second in a Kim Muir chase to the 2025 Gold Cup winner Inothewayurthinkin. A repeat of that effort will see him be there or thereabouts at the finish.

Uttoxeter 3:00

0.5 point each way Git Maker 10/1 Unibet & Paddy Power, 5 places.

Best of Luck,

Nicky

Hi Reader The first classic of the year takes place at Newmarket on the Rowley Mile. It's a difficult race to assess with several fancied horses missing the race due to setbacks. We take aim at the earlier heritage handicap over a mile and a furlong. I am looking for an improved performance from a four year old following his good comeback run last month.
