William Hill Lincoln Heritage Handicap Preview..

Hi Reader

The Lincoln Handicap is a flat handicap horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged four years or older. It is run over a distance of 1 mile at Doncaster in late March or early April.

It is traditionally the feature event on the first Saturday of Britain's turf flat racing season. It usually takes place one or two weeks before the Grand National, and for betting purposes the two races form the Spring Double. The only jockey to have ever won both legs was Dave Dick in 1956.

Jamie Spencer Set to Finally Conquer the Lincoln

I always try to take on a favourite in the big flat handicaps.

However, a very strong case can be made for La Botte winning the Lincoln. The lightly raced four-year-old has run three times on the all-weather and twice on turf. He met some traffic in running when an unlucky neck second to Arabian Story in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot last summer.

La Botte was jarred up following his run in the Britannia Stakes so missed a while. There was talk of going to Australia as he is owned by Australians, but they decided to stay in the UK for another season. La Botte ran a cracker on his first run this year in the Lincoln trial at Wolverhampton. Jamie Spencer settled him out the back and he did well to come through for a close fourth. All three horses that finished ahead of La Botte ran on the front end in the Lincoln Trial. La Botte will be ready for this race and on good to soft ground I think his class and turn of foot will prove too good for the competition.

Urban Lion runs well in these big field handicaps over a mile. He ran well from a low draw to place fifth in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot last summer. He ran well again at Ascot on Shergar Cup Day when third to Ebt’s Guard beaten only half a length. We forgive his final two runs at York and Newmarket where things didn’t pan out. Mick Channon trained Johan to win the Lincoln in 2022 so it’s over to Jack Channon this year. Urban Lion looks to be well drawn low in stall two. Most of the fancied runners and pace horses are middle to low drawn. A solid each way player at a good double-digit price.

Doncaster 3:32

0.5 point each way La Botte 4/1 Boylesports & Unibet, 6 places.

0.5 point each way Urban Lion 12/1 Paddy Power, Bet365, Boylesports & Unibet, 5 places.

Best of Luck,

Nicky

Hi Reader The first classic of the year takes place at Newmarket on the Rowley Mile. It's a difficult race to assess with several fancied horses missing the race due to setbacks. We take aim at the earlier heritage handicap over a mile and a furlong. I am looking for an improved performance from a four year old following his good comeback run last month.
