Coral Scottish Grand National Handicap Chase Preview..

Hi Reader

The Scottish Grand National is a Premier Handicap National Hunt chase.

It is run at Ayr, Scotland, over a distance of about 4 miles and during its running there are 27 fences to be jumped. It is a handicap race, and takes place each year in April.

It is Scotland's equivalent of the Grand National, and is held during Ayr's two-day Scottish Grand National Festival meeting. This year the ground is soft, heavy in places which is unusual for a Scottish national. This morning there has been three non-runners declared due to the going. Road to Home from the Willie Mullins stable is out and a significant non-runner near the top of the betting market.

Scottish Grand National Blues

The Scottish Grand National is lacking some of the top-rated staying chasers this year. I guess it comes so close after the Irish and Aintree Grand Nationals. Nevertheless, there is twenty-one runners keeping it very competitive.

King of Answers looked like he would stay all day when finishing off his race strongly in the National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. He carried 11-10 that day up the Cheltenham Hill so should have no stamina concerns over a flat four miles on soft ground.

King of Answers has won twice on soft ground at Kelso when ridden on the front end. A good start to get near the front is important for King of the Answers here. He is a novice having his sixth chase run so needs daylight when jumping.

Chasingouttheblues is on a roll with two wins leading into this race. He likes soft ground so the rain on Friday is a help to ensure there is a good dig in the ground. Chasingouttheblues finished second to Newton Tornado over three miles at Doncaster in January.

Mark Walford ran him at Catterick in first time pieces and the horse finished like a train to run down Paddy O’Mahler. It was a similar story at Carlisle in March when he powered home from well off the leader to win going away at three miles and a half furlong. He is a young improving novice chaser that looks ready for marathon distances. The handicapper raised him only four pounds for his latest win. That allows Chasingtheblues to run here off a lovely low weight of 10-9.

Ayr 3:35

0.5 point each way King of Answers 11/2 Paddy Power & Boylesports, 6 places.

0.5 point each way Chasingouttheblues 5/1 Boylesports, Paddy Power & Skybet, 6 places.

Best of Luck,

Nicky
